Women’s Natural Building Workshop

lights off.

january 26-February 5, 2019

Hosted at IWP retreat center, Chiang Dao, Northern Thailand

This workshop is for women by women.  It’s a chance to learn how to build your own earthen home through doing it together.  It’s a chance to get hands-on experience in a supportive environment and learn from other women the incredibly empowering experience of building with earth.

For the past several years we have been hosting women’s natural building workshops together with the International Women’s Partnership for Peace and Justice (IWP).  IWP is a feminist organization working with grassroots activists on sustainable strategies for social change by integrating feminism, nonviolent action and spiritual practice. IWP and Pun Pun are a perfect match for women’s building courses, bringing together feminism and natural building, as well as a belief that work and play should always integrate the building of community.

The purpose of these workshops is to create a space where women can learn together with and from other women and empower themselves to realize they can create their own homes and spaces together.  This will be our 12th all women’s build, as we’ve now done seven other workshops in Northern Thailand, two in Burma and one in the Philippines.

The workshop will be hosted at IWP’s gorgeous site in Chiang Dao and this year’s project is to build together their new meditation hall.  Through this experience of building together, you will learn to make your own natural, affordable, and beautiful home from this flexible and readily available material, earth.

Join us! And bring your mother, your lover, your sisters, daughters, and friends!

Open to women of any age in any physical condition who have a desire to get muddy and build something spectacular and learn from others, supported by other women.

Techniques and Topics:

The whole workshop will be very hands-on and focus on allowing participants to experience every topic themselves.

  • Site selection
  • Basics of earthen building design
  • Selecting soil for building
  • Making adobe bricks
  • Building with adobe
  • Making and applying earthen plasters
  • Homemade natural finishes including clay paints

Community living:

Evening activities and exchanges will also be included. A large aspect of the course also includes the experience of living in community with other participants. We have found this element to be a major contributor in the experience of the course for participants.

LOGISTICS PERTAINING TO THE COURSE

General Schedule

Morning and afternoon sessions will be held with an extended break after lunch in the hot part of the day.  We will pick up participants on the 26th at 10am from Chiang Mai city and provide transportation back to the city by the evening of the 5th.

The Project

The building site will be held at IWP’s land and center, on which we have built already 3 buildings through other courses.  IWP hosts a training center in Mae Rim and they wanted to expand to being able to host individuals looking for longer retreat stays when they found this beautiful piece of property at the base of Chiang Dao mountain.

Teaching team

Various community members from Pun Pun farm and IWP center

Living situation

Since the site is not ready to host all participants, accommodation will be hosted offsite, about 3 km away at our friend’s guesthouse.  This guesthouse is also a beautiful site with great views of Chiang Dao mountain and clean and simple accommodation.  Accommodation is shared rooms with beds, hot showers, and screens.  We will provide transportation to and from the worksite daily.

All meals will be shared and eaten in the communal kitchen.  Vegetarian and fish options will be available.  Food will be simple Thai food with brown rice.  We try to use as much of our own produce and other seasonally available produce as possible so we tend to focus on a primarily vegetable and whole grain diet with added protein from eggs, fish, or tofu.

14,000 baht/person.  This fee includes pick-up and drop-off in Chiang Mai on the first and last day of the course, all food during the course, accommodation and instruction.  All proceeds go towards supporting IWP to grow and continue with their work with communities.

Community living aspect

Each course will have approximately 15-20 participants.
